SEPPED RANKING PILOTS
Consistency, regularity or racing strategy don't come into play here... what counts here is "pure speed".
To be more assertive, I calculated the average difference in the qualifying times of the great drivers in relation to their teammates and of these teammates in relation to other teammates in other seasons, always in the same car, to form a SPEED RANKING OF THE PILOTS.
Since the old F1 was very different, I separated the drivers into two ERAS (50s/60s and 70s onwards). To simplify, I used the precision of the times in tenths of a second, and to avoid injustices, I made some adjustments in the calculation of the times, disregarding:
-
Training on long tracks (eg old Spa and Nurburgring and Clemont-Ferrand) as the size of these tracks maximizes the difference between riders;
-
Some beginnings and ends of his career, considering that the pilot would not be at his peak;
-
Some season in which the driver did not adapt to the car or had different equipment compared to the first driver, training sessions in which the driver had problems, or even with team interference.

* Senna announced that he would not renew with McLaren in Portugal, Ron Dennis was angry with Senna and in the Portuguese GP and Japanese GP, the English team prioritized Mika Hakkinen's car. If it weren't for this, the difference between Senna and Hakkinen in training could be greater.
Teams use this subterfuge, when the first driver leaves the team, they start to prioritize the driver who will stay on the team the following year. This happened to Piquet at the end of 1985 and 1987, Senna at the end of 1993, Barrichello at the end of 1996, Alonso at the end of 2007, Kimi at the end of 2013, Vettel at the end of 2014 and 2021, and Ocon at the end of 2024.
See articles reproduced below from Jornal o Globo 25/09/1993 pg 31 and 28/10/1993 pg 34, about the priority treatment given to Mika Hakkinen's car, when Senna announced his departure from McLaren on the GP Portugal weekend.
